Michael G. “Shakey” Smolenak 85, of Barton, went to be with his wife Rose on Saturday February 23, 2019 at Liza’s Place, Wheeling. He was born November 11, 1933 in Barton, a son of the late Gabriel and Mary (Krolak) Smolenak.
Mike was a retired employee of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Martins Ferry Plant with 41 years of service, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Wolfhurst. Mike was a lifelong member of the Barton VFD, and spent many years as President, and Vice President. He was one of the founders of the Barton Brave's baseball association, the Bridgeport Forester Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Francis Cabrini Council #11195, a member and sheet grader of St. John's Central Booster Club. He was a #1 Polka Fest Bartender, an avid Michigan Fan, he enjoyed and all the teams in Detroit.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Rose Marie (Klotz) Smolenak, a granddaughter Alissa Clovis, a brother John Smolenak, and a sister Irene Godaway.
Surviving are his children Judy (Greg) Clovis, and Mick (Jackie) Smolenak and Kirk (Jennifer) Smolenak all of Barton, a sister Mary Zuzak of St. Clairsville, and sister-in-law Kay Smolenak of Barton, eleven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. A heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Liza's Place for the caring attention given to our father and family.
Friends will be received at the Wilson Funeral Home 920 National Road Brookside on Thursday February 28, 2019 from 2-8 pm. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church Wolfhurst, with Fr. John Mucha as celebrant, interment in Holly Memorial Gardens Cemetery Pleasant Grove. Barton FVD Services will be held on Thursday at 7 pm at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Barton VFD at PO Box 631 Barton, Oh 43905, or Liza’s Place 10686 St. Rt. 150 Rayland, Ohio 43943.
