Obituary

Carl J. Mamone, 79, of Jefferson St., Martins Ferry, OH died Tue., Jan. 13, 2004 at home. He was born Nov. 11, 1924 in Martins Ferry a son of the late Joseph A. and Elizabeth (Columbo) Mamone. Carl started his career with Hanna Coal Co. In 1959 he left Hopedale High School as a teacher and coach and began his tenure at Martins Ferry High School as a vocational teacher, assistant coach, and eventually head football coach in 1965 & 1966. After his retirement from teaching in 1967 he began a 20 year career with the Ohio Education Association retiring in 1988. Carl was elected Mayor of Martins Ferry in 1988 and served until 1996. During this time he was also known throughout the area for his skills as a negotiator for various groups. He was a member of Scotch Ridge Presbyterian Church, Rotary, Kiwanis, V.F.W. Post 3613, Italian-American Club, American Legion Post 38, Elks Lodge #895, and the Purple Rider Boosters all of Martins Ferry. In addition he was a member of the Belmont Co. 911 Board, Belmont-Jefferson Co. Solid Waste Board, Belmont Co. Democrat Central Committee, the National LST Association, and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy WWII. Surviving are his wife Shirley J. (Finney) Mamone, two sons Joe Mamone of Martins Ferry and Jeff (Lynne) Mamone of St. Clairsville, two grandchildren Joe and Angie Mamone, and a brother Larry W. Mamone of Martins Ferry. Friends will be received Thur. 2-4 & 6-8 PM and Fri., Jan. 16, 2004 from 10 AM until time of services at 11:00 AM with Joe Ellis officiating at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH. Elks services will be held Thurs. at 7:00 PM in the funeral home. The Belmont Co. Council of the V.F.W. will conduct military honors at the funeral home prior to burial in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Scotch Ridge Presbyterian Church.
