Obituary

Carolyn Ann (Rauch) Sommer, 74, of Martins Ferry, OH, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Liza's Place, Wheeling, WV, surrounded by her family, after a long battle with cancer. She was born May 25, 1941 in Dayton, OH a daughter of Dolores (McCain) Rauch and the late Robert Frank Rauch. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Karl and Carrie Sommer, brothers-in-law Richard Neatherton, Doug Slaton, and Karl Sommer, Jr. and his wife Shirley. Carol was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Martins Ferry, where she served as Church Council Secretary and as chair of the Tuesday Morning Work Crew, which completed extensive renovations of the church. She served as General Chair of the Special Gifts Division of East Ohio Regional Hospital Campaign to build the new Surgical Center. Carol was an active member and Past-President of East Ohio Hospital Auxiliary for over 40 years. She was an active member and Past-President of Alpha Pi Sigma Sorority for over 44 years and an active parent volunteer for many years for the Martins Ferry Swim Team. Surviving in addition to her mother of Dayton, OH are her husband of 52 years, Keith Alan Sommer, whom she met while both were attending B.G.S.U., her daughters, Christine (Jeff) Furbee of Columbus, OH, Michele (Jonathan Turk) Sommer of Mahwah, NJ, and Julie Sommer of Seattle, WA, grandchildren, Jackson, Calvin and Carrie Furbee and Henry Turk and sisters, Dixie Neatherton and Vickie Slaton both of Germantown, OH, sister-in-law, Cheryl Scheehle and her husband Bob of St. Clairsville, OH, sister-in-law, Nancy Sommer of Martins Ferry and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank her beloved sister-in-law, Cheryl and Mary Joyce Furbee for the loving care they provided Carol. They would also like to acknowledge Valley Hospice for providing comfort and support during their time of need. A special thank you is extended to the staff of the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center including Dr. Doreen Agnese, Dr. Robert Shapiro and Dr. Maryam Lustberg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: East Ohio Regional Hospital Auxiliary, c/o Auxiliary Coordinator, 90 North 4th St., Martins Ferry, OH, 43935. Family and friends will be received at Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH, Saturday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 40 N. 4th St., Martins Ferry with Revs. Thomas N. Thomas and John Brandenburg officiating. Burial follows in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book below.
