Obituary

Dominic L. Gitto, 84, of N. 7th St., Martins Ferry, OH died suddenly Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV. He was born Dec. 7, 1923 in Martins Ferry a son of the late Salvatore "Sam" and Concetta "Anna" (Nester) Gitto. He was retired from the Yorkville Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. Dominic was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Martins Ferry, former Martins Ferry Eagles #456, V.F.W. Post #4811 , Yorkville, OH, American Legion Post #38, and Italian American Club both of Martins Ferry, YMCA of Wheeling for thirty-nine years, Charter member of the Bulltown Reunion Association, and the Purpler Riders Booster Club. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, WW II on the LSM 310 where he was known as "Doc", also a member of the U.S.S. - LSMR Association. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Steve Gitto, three sisters Rose Insana, Mary Zitari, and Phyllis Bednar. Surviving are his wife of fifty-seven years Mary (Torre) Gitto, two daughters Carmen Prati-Miller and her husband Jan of Martins Ferry, and Donna Winland and her husband Wilbur of St. Clairsville, OH, a sister Frances (Jack) Amato of Elm Grove, WV, two grandsons Lucas Prati of Steubenville, OH, and Adam Winland of San Francisco, CA, and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Sunday 12-4 & 6-8 pm at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Martins Ferry with Rev. Thomas A. Magary officiating. Entombment follows in Mt. Calvary Mausoleum, Wheeling, WV. Rosary devotions will be recited Sunday at 3:00 pm followed by Wake services at 7:30 pm both in the funeral home. Full military services by the Belmont County Council of the V.F.W. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church Elevator Fund, 20 N. Fourth St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
