Donald W. Burkle, 84, of Virginia St., Martins Ferry, OH died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV. He was born May 22, 1924 in Martins Ferry a son of the late Edward and Laura (Marquardt) Burkle. He was a retired employee of the Martins Ferry Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. Donald was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, former church council member, Lutheran Brotherhood and the Tuesday work crew all of Martins Ferry, Ohio City Lodge #486 F. & A.M., Martins Ferry, Martins Ferry Chapter #173 Royal Arch Masons. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp, WW II. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Harold E. Burkle, three sons-in-law Michael McFarland, David Longenette, and David Kropp. Surviving are his wife of sixty years Phyllis "Jean" Burkle, three daughters Janet (Louis) Hart of Wheeling, Joyce McFarland of Woodbridge, VA, and Leigh Ann Longenette of Annapolis, MD, six grandchildren Paige M. Still, Patrick M. McFarland, Wendy K. McFarland, Trevor L. (Kelly) Kropp, Stephanie L. Kropp, and Kelly D. Longenette and her fiancee David Herold, a sister-in-law Elsie Burkle of Eaton, OH, and two great grandchildren. Friends will be received Friday, 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH where services will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at 11:00 am with Pastor Philip Van Dam officiating. Burial follows in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, OH. Masonic services will be held Friday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Martins Ferry Student Athletic Growth Fund, 5001 Ayers-Limestone Rd., Martins Ferry, OH 43935.
