Donald R. Sommer Donald R."Dutch" Sommer, 83, of Carlisle St., Martins Ferry, OH died Wed., Aug. 7, 2002 at home. He was born Oct. 11, 1918 in Martins Ferry a son of the late Albert L. and Sophia Laipple Sommer. He was a construction superintendent for the former Klotz Brothers Construction of Martins Ferry and retired from Robert A. Gribben Construction of Steubenville, OH. Don was a life time member of St. John's Lutheran Church; life member of V.F. W. Post #3613; and a member of Eagles Aerie #456 all of Martins Ferry; life member of Bellaire D.A.V. #17; 57yr. member of Carpenter's Union #3 of Wheeling; 44 yr. member of the Alert Engine Co. of the Martins Ferry Fire Dept.;and a veteran of the U.S. Army WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Elizabeth Delcotto Sommer, two brothers Karl W. and A. Irvin Sommer, and two sisters Louise Truax and Martha Hathaway. Surviving are three sons Donald W. Sommer and his wife Linda of Houston, TX, Jeffrey L. Sommer and his wife Diana of Martins Ferry, and Brent W. Sommer of Sausalito, CA, his friend and partner Evelyn McLaughlin of Martins Ferry; two brothers Ralph Sommer of St. Clairsville and Kenneth Sommer of Martins Ferry, a sister Betty Thomas of Tiltonsville, three grandchildren Todd Sommer and his wife Tiffany of Columbus, OH, Jason Melendez of San Diego, CA, and Nicole Melendez of Pittsburgh, PA, and a great grandson Ty Sommer of Columbus. Friends will be received at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH Friday 2-4 & 7-9 PM where services will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Peter L. Pilger officiating. Burial follows in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry with full military graveside honors by the Belmont Co. Council of the V.F.W. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions my be made to the Don Sommer Memorial Tree Fund, c/o Citizens Savings Bank, P.O. Box 10, Martins Ferry, OH 43935. Alert Engine Co. will hold services Fri. at 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
