Thonen, Elmer M., 98, of Mount Pleasant, Ohio, died Thursday January 26, 2012 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio. He was born in Martins Ferry on February 17, 1913, a son of the late Martin J. and Rebecca Ludtman Thonen. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Helen A. Miller Thonen; two sons: John and James Thonen; four brothers and five sisters. Elmer was a retired employee of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel , Mingo Plant, a member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, Dillonvale American Legion, Post# 529; Island Senior Citizens; WWII Army Veteran serving in 342nd Infantry and was awarded Combat Infantry Badge; and Bronze Star. He was a wonderful father, husband, and grandfather, and loved by many. Elmer is survived by two daughters: Helen Jean and her husband Paul Harbourt of Mount Pleasant and Susan Forrester and her husband Joseph of Wheeling, W.Va., a daughter in law Marcella Thonen of Ft. Worth, TX., six grandchildren: Mike (Shelly) Harbourt, Tanya DeCapito, Loraine (Jeff) Shea, Joel Thonen, Staci (Chris) Sengewalt , Matthew Forrester; and six great-grandchildren: Miranda and Taylor Harbourt, Amber and Anthony DeCapito, Brennan and Madeline Shea. Friends will be received Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 154 Second Street, Dillonvale, Ohio where vigil service will be held at 7:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, Dillonvale, with Monsignor John Kolesar as celebrant. Military Honors will be provided by Dillonvale American Legion Post 529 at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Adalbert Church, or the Dillonvale American Legion.
