Frank Baxter 85, of Bridgeport, Ohio, passed Monday June 1, 2015 at OVMC Wheeling. He was born in Bridgeport, on February 24, 1930, a son of the late Walter and Anna Bluthhart Baxter. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Mary Elizabeth Kyser Baxter; a son Frank Jeffrey Baxter; brothers: Robert (killed in action during WWII in Germany; Bernard Baxter, Bunk Baxter; and sisters: Ruth Ann and Clara Baxter. Frank is survived by his daughter Cheryl of Bridgeport; four grandchildren: Jeffery, Justin, Joshua and Emily Baxter; several great-grandchildren, and also several nieces and nephews. Frank graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1949. He was part of the Bridgeport School System more than 60 years as a student, athlete, teacher and administrator for 47 years, retiring in 2004. From 1962, he was a Basketball Coach, guiding the team to a solid 269-128 record. His teams won five OVAC Championships, 11 Sectional Titles, 2 District and one Regional Championship. Bridgeport Posted an unbeaten regular season in 1966, ending with a final 23-1 record and UPI Class A Champs and finished as the 1969 Ohio Class A runner up with a 25-2 record at a time when there were only two classes in the state, and became the first recipient of the OVAC All Sports Coach of the Year award. He was also selected Eastern "Coach of the Year" on several occasions. In 1988, he was the Eastern District Athletic Director of the Year, and was inducted into the Ohio Athletic Administrative Hall of Fame, in 1994. He was also recognized by the Ohio High School Basketball Association. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1987 with the Earl Haberfield Coaches Award. He also received the Carl Hamill Award from the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Club in 2003 and when the new Bridgeport High School was constructed the floor of the John C. Havlicek gymnasium was named after Frank Baxter. Frank served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the VFW at St. Clairsville, OH., and a lifetime member of Bridgeport American Legion. Member of the Ohio Teachers Retirement Association, Belmont County Teachers Association, AARP, West Liberty University Alumni Association, University of Dayton Alumni Association, and the Belmont County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Belmont County Animal Shelter, 45244 National Road, St. Clairsville, OH 43950. The family of Frank Baxter want to thank the entire community of Bridgeport for their love and devotion to his life and coaching career. In his coaching and teaching careers he touched the lives of so many people which made his life greater. Whether you played sports or not, he treated every student the same.
