Gary "Gar" Lynn Schmitt, 46, of Belmont, Ohio passed away Monday, August 22, 2011 at his brother and sister-in-law's home in Flushing, Ohio. He was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, February 16, 1965, son of the late Francis Schmitt, Sr. and Margaret DeLeau Schmit. Gar was a 1983 graduate of Union Local High School and had been employed by Logotek, where he enjoyed being part of the team for many years. He was a 32 year member of the Belmont Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Belmont Village Council. Gar had a passion for Schmitt Racing, enjoyed golfing with his brothers and nephews at family gatherings, and had a great love for family and friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brother, Francis Schmitt, Jr.; sister, Marcella Schmitt Demkowitz; and sister-in-law, Linda Berry Schmitt. He is survived by brothers, Roger Schmitt of Morristown, OH, Robert (Herm) Jennifer Schmitt of Belmont, OH, Rick (Mary) Schmitt of Belmont, OH, Randy (Wendy) Schmitt of Flushing, OH, Donnie Schmitt of Belmont, OH, Danny (Penny) Schmitt of Belmont, OH, and Jim Schmitt of Belmont, OH; sisters, Patty Schmitt Palmer of Bethesda, OH and Sandy Schmitt McConnaughy of Columbus, OH; mother figure, Marlene Gatten of Morristown, OH; nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Demkowitz, Eric Berry, Bobby Palmer, Ricky Schmitt and Jennifer, Ronnie Schmitt, Joe Schmitt and Jessica, Stephen Schmitt, Pec Schmitt, Robert Gallagher, Jason Gallagher, William Burnham, Cary Schmitt, Andrew Schmitt, Aaron Schmitt, Justin McConnaughy, and Alex McConnaughy; nieces, Rhonda Palmer, Renee Palmer, Shawna Parker and Jason, Misty Davis and Jerome; seven great nephews; eight great nieces; and several close friends, Destiny Goff, Shawn Beckowitz, Ed Tacosik, Kaye Anderson, Stacey Angelo, Bob Mills, and the Miller Family. Family and friends will be received, Wednesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 PM, at Kelly-Kemp-Braido Funeral Home, 322 North Main Street, Bethesda, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted, Thursday 11 AM, with Pastor Ashley Barker-Steele and Tina Gallaher officiating. Interment will take place at Belmont Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
