Obituary

George P. Pontia, 97, of Martins Ferry, OH, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV. He was born Jan. 7, 1917 in Bulgar , PA a son of the late Emile Pontia, Sr. and Malvina (Granier) Pontia. He was retired from the Yorkville Plant of the Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. George was a founding member of Mackey Community Center of Martins Ferry and a member of the Hungarian Cultural Society, St. Clairsville R C Flyers and the V.F.W. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Bernice E. (Drasylko) Pontia, brothers; Emile, Marshall and Albert Pontia, sisters; Evelyn White, Stella Cole, Rose Harris and Bessie Hamel, a grandson Scott Offord. Surviving are his daughters; Becky (Kenneth) Robey, Sr. of Martins Ferry and Georgia (David) Rainero of Pittsburgh, PA, grandchildren; Ken Robey, Jr., Ryan Robey, and Kevin (Brenda) Offord, great-grandchildren; Doug, Manda, Elizabeth, and Christopher Robey and Jason (Leigh) Offord, David Offord and Erin Offord, great great grandchildren; Aubrey and Sophia. Friends will be received at Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH, Friday 2-4 & 6-8 pm where services will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at 11:00 am with Pastor Jim Monogioudis officiating. Burial follows in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, OH. Military honors will be presented by the Belmont County V.F.W. Honor Guard at 10:45am at the funeral home prior to the funeral.
