Harold W.
Heslop
August 9, 1919 – June 4, 2006
Harold W. 'Digger' 'Pop' Heslop, 86, of Brian Center Retirement Apts., 5945 Reddman Rd., Charlotte, NC, formerly of Cape Cod, MA, and Martins Ferry, OH died Sunday, June 4, 2006 of congestive heart failure. Harold was born August 9, 1919 in Martins Ferry to Wilbur Beymer and Louise (Saunders) Heslop. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Ann (Yingling) Heslop, three daughters, Deborah (Tim) Brannen of Huntersville, NC; Melissa Mignin of Auburn, MI; and Holly (Mark) Joseph of Charlottesville, VA; two sisters Audrey Roethlisberger of Lima, OH and Jean Ann (Chuck) Bennett of Martins Ferry, and a brother Wilbur (Sara Jo) Heslop of Martins Ferry. Harold was a retired partner in two family-owned businesses, Heslop Funeral Home, where he was fondly known as 'Digger' and the former Heslop Furniture store, both in Martins Ferry. He was a proud World War II veteran and member of the former VFW Post #3613 of Martins Ferry and the Greater Charlotte Area Chapter of the Blind Veterans Association (due to macular degeneration and glaucoma). Harold was a devoted husband and father. His family meant the world to him and he was very proud of his seven grandchildren, Jessica Joseph Tischer, Katie Mignin Janni, Jillian Joseph, Emily Mignin Huna, Jenna Joseph, Sarah Mignin, and Christopher Brannen, all of whom loved their "Pop". Harold "never met a stranger", and he kept his wonderful sense of humor to the very end. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Regina Harrell, Presbyterian Senior Healthcare, and Hospice of Charlotte, especially Steve Caldwell, Harold's Hospice nurse and Scottie Stamper, Hospice chaplain, for their care and support. A private memorial service was held for Harold's immediate family on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in the Brian Center Chapel, officiated by Scottie Stamper. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that Harold's memory be honored with a donation to either Hospice at Charlotte & Palliative Care, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or to your local Hospice. J.B. Tallent Funeral Service and Crematory is serving the family of Mr. Heslop.
