Harold V. Matthews, Sr., 97, formerly of Matthews Ln., Rayland, OH died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005 at Sunset Health Care, Harrisville, OH. He was born Apr. 11, 1908 in Washington County, OH a son of the late Calip and Annie (Lee) Matthews. He was retired from the former Blaw-Knox Foundry of Wheeling and a member of the Church of Christ of Pleasant Grove, OH. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Harold V. Matthews, Jr. four brothers Charles, Alva, Roy, and Snow Matthews, and seven sisters Carrie McCormick, Pearl, Anna, and Lorena Matthews, Laura Conley, Verna Shook, and Nellie Griffen. Surviving are his wife Beatrice Eileen (Coss) Matthews, five daughters Ruth (Richard) Harris, Sharon (Fred) Freeze, both of Rayland, Erin Sue DeVaul of Columbus, Lois L. Cook of Noblesville, IN, and Illa Rae (Ray) Covington of Mt. Pleasant, four sons Donald Matthews of Mt. Pleasant, Leslie (Brenda) Matthews of Adena, James (Alice) Matthews of Detroit, MI, and Richard (Tina) Matthews of St. Clairsville, a brother Virgil (Irene) Matthews of Mt. Pleasant, twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Friends will be received Thur., 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH where services will be held Fri., Dec. 23, 2005 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Thomas N. Thomas officiating. Burial follows in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove. Memorial contributions my be made to Valley Hospice, Inc., 98B E. Cove Ave., Wheeling, WV 26003.
