Obituary

Helene E. (Ficker) Knollinger, 95, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, surrounded by her family. Helen was born March 5, 1920 in Stollberg, Sachen, Germany, daughter of the late Otto and Emma Rohner Ficker. She emigrated from Germany to the United States at age three and the family settled in Weirton, WV. She graduated from Weir High School in January of 1938, worked for the Bank of Weirton for five years, and then married Stanley (Tom) Knollinger in April of 1942. The couple settled in Centerville, OH, where farming became their way of life. Helen was active in 4-H for 25 years and worked in the activities department at Bell Nursing Home because she enjoyed helping others. She was active in the Belmont County Extension, as well as, RSVP. She enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening, and Sudoku puzzles. She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Benwood, WV. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley (Tom) Knollinger in November 2006 and sister, Ida Marie McVicker. Helen is survived by her three daughters, Nancy Niederst of Bethesda, OH, Ottolee Umbaugh of Sagamore Hills, OH, and Jeanie (John) Orrison of St. Clairsville, OH, with whom she had resided; three grandchildren, Valencia Niederst (Bob Reed) of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Aaron Mills of Sagamore Hills, Oh, and Dr. Julianne (Dr. Michael) Busa of Shutesbury, MA; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth (Albert) Daugherty of Weirton, WV; sister-in-law, Estella McMahon of Alpharetta, GA; extended family, Sue and Dennis Hoffman of Benwood, WV; her special buddy, Chick; and other grand-dogs, Waylon, Biscotti, Miss Lucy, Mazie, Banjo, and Haley. Family and friends will be welcome to visit, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m., until the time of serving beginning at 11 a.m., Kelly Kemp Braido & Patron Funeral Home & Crematory, 322 N. Main Street, Bethesda, Ohio. Pastor Sean Smith officiating. Interment will be Tuesday, Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Weirton, WV. Special thanks to Valley Hospice and Lisa for such wonderful care.
