Howard L. Sykes, 88, of Martins Ferry, OH died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at Shadyside Care Center, Shadyside, OH. He was born Dec. 29, 1923 in Brookside, OH a son of the late Leslie and Viola (Applegarth) Sykes. He was retired from the Martins Ferry Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh-Steel. Howard was the proprietor of Sykes's Party Center in Brushy Fork He was a member of the Colerain V.F.W. and a veteran of the U.S. Navy WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Bailey. Surviving are his wife of 61 years Julia F. (Smith) Sykes, two daughters; Luann (Keith) Hamilton of Freeport, OH and Loriann (Fiancé Charles Shanks) Thomas of St. Clairsville, OH, grandchildren; Brandy (Jack) Sall, Shelby Davis and Shannon Thomas, step-grandchildren; Kody and Kole Hamilton, and his great granddaughter Avalyn Sall. Friends will be received Monday 3-8 pm and Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012 from 12:30 pm until time of services at 1:30 pm at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry with Rev. William O. Webster officiating. Burial follows in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hospice, 10686 Ste. Rte. 150, Rayland, OH 43943.
