Ira Eugene "Gene" Wheeles

Ira Eugene “Gene” Wheeles, 77, of McMechen, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Liza’s Place, surrounded by family. He was born on June 25, 1948, in Erie, Kansas, the son of the late Cleo “Slats” and Maudie (White) Wheeles.

Ira graduated from the University of Kansas with a BS in Science Education and a Nursing Degree from Murry State. He served as an officer in the United States Navy for 21 years, dedicating his career to serving his country through multiple conflicts. After retiring from the Navy, he continued his service to others by working in hospital administration, ultimately retiring from St. Joseph Hospital in Reading, PA. His spirit will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as he touched the lives of many through his kindness and generosity.

Left to cherish his memory are his partner in life, Mark Loppe; his children, Patrick (Carlee) Wheeles, Michael (Katie) Wheeles, and Philip (Kimberly) Wheeles; and his brother, Larry Wheeles. He is also remembered by the late Tina Loppe and Laura Loppe. His grandchildren include Cassandra, Elizabeth, Alexander, Zachary, and Landon Wheeles; Chloe’ Loppe; Jorge “Alex” Alvarez; Jacob Loppe; Scotlynne P. Werner; and Trent J. Werner.

In keeping with his wishes, all services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Bridgeport, Ohio 43912.
