James A. "Hinges" Gates, 91, of Martins Ferry, OH, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010. He was born June 2, 1919 in Warwood, WV a son of the late Russell and Irene (Alexander) Gates. He retired after 50 years of service with the former Hall-Gillespie Monuments of Martins Ferry. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Martins Ferry. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Violet V. (Hall) Gates and a brother Russell A. Gates, Jr. Surviving are a son Gary A. Gates of Martins Ferry, two grandchildren Gary Steven (Gegit) Gates of Wheeling, WV, and Heather Gates-Mallett of St. Clairsville, OH, five great grandchildren, two nieces Marsha (Keith) Perry, and Jeanie (William) Barrett, and a nephew William K. (Stephanie) Hall. Friends will be received Friday, Aug. 6, 2010 at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH from noon until 1:00 pm. Graveside services will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry with Pastor John L. Cook officiating. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
