Obituary

James R. Heslop, 80, of Woods Run Dr., Newark, OH, formerly of Roosevelt Ave., Martins Ferry, OH went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005 at Newark Healthcare Center, Newark, OH. He was born Oct. 16, 1924 in Martins Ferry a son of the late Russell L. and Gladys A. (Stillwell) Heslop. Jim was the retired owner/operator of the former Heslop Furniture Store of Martins Ferry and was a licensed funeral director/embalmer with the Heslop Funeral Home for many years. He was manager of the former Stewart Brothers Alward Furniture Store and currently an associate with Criss-Schoedinger Funeral & Cremation Service both of Newark. He served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Martins Ferry and the First Presbyterian Church of Newark. Jim was a member of American Legion Post #38, honorary member of the Martins Ferry Fire Dept. Ladder Co., former eight year member of the Martins Ferry City School District Board of Education, graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, and a veteran of the U.S. Army WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Harry Heslop. Surviving are his wife Irene (Szabo) Heslop, a son James R. (Debbie) Heslop, II of Chardon, OH, a daughter Suzanne (Smith) Brewster of Powell, OH, and three grandchildren Glynis Brewster, and Allison and Kristen Heslop. Friends will be received at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH, Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Friends will then be received Thursday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 179 Granville St., Newark, OH from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, Newark, OH with Rev. John Minihan and Rev. Dr. Bill N. Lawrence officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 400 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935 or the First Presbyterian Church, 65 N. 3rd St., Newark, OH 43055.
