James W. Sockman, 65, of Pleasant Grove, OH, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at his residence. He was born Mar. 24, 1946 in Martins Ferry, OH a son of Frances (Lemal) Sockman and the late Francis "Bud" Sockman. He was retired from the North American #6 Coal Mine, Powhatan Pt., OH. Jim was a member of the First Christian Church of Martins Ferry, and a life member of VFW Post #626 and American Legion Post #52 both of Bellaire, OH. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and U.S. Marine Corps. In addition to his father Jim was preceded in death by a nephew, Kirk Adams, and a great nephew, Gabriel Alexander. Surviving in addition to his mother of Yorkville, OH are his wife, Sandra (Truax) Sockman, a son, Curtis Morris of Inwood, WV, two sisters, Patricia (Larry) French of Dillonvale, OH, and Susan (Jim) Crockard of Wheeling, WV, a brother, John (Jennifer) Sockman of Rayland, OH, two brothers-in-law, Ryan (Annet) Truax, and Mark (Kathy) Truax, and a sister-in-law JeanAnne (Wayne) Cross. Friends will be received Thursday 2-8 pm at Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry where services will be held Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at 11:30 am with Pastor John Lemal officiating. Burial follows in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, OH. Military honors will be presented by the Belmont County Council of the V.F.W. prior to services at the funeral home.
