SMITH, John Albert ?Butch?, 91, of Bridgeport, Ohio was called by his Lord on Monday January 3, 2011 after a brief illness at the Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio. John was born on June 28, 1919 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, the youngest son of the late John W. Smith and Nancy Elizabeth (Evans) Smith. John was a loving and caring husband of 67 years to the late Mary T. (Shoulter) Smith. John went Utah and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1937 to 1939. John joined the U.S. Army in 1941, married his sweetheart, Mary in 1942 and served his country during WWII as a 707 tank commander at the Battle of the Bulge. John was active as a Boy Scout leader. He was a member of Belmont Better Hunting and Fishing Club, life member of the Colerain VFW as Chaplin, West Bridgeport Methodist Church and Barton Methodist ch, 707th Tank Battalion, 5th Armored Division Reunions, Senior Center of Colerain, Ohio. John retired from Ziegenfelders Ice Cream Company and Lansing-Bridgeport School System. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death his loving wife, infant son Earl, 3 sisters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his children: Nancy Phillips (Woodie) of Pleasantville, Ohio, where he resided for the last eighteen months: Joyce LaMotte (Andrew III) of Bridgeport, Ohio; John A. Smith II (Deb) of Hartville, Ohio; six grandchildren: LaNette Krob (Kevin) of Bridgeport, Ohio; Michael R. Phillips (Michele) of Pleasantville; Andrew R. LaMotte IV (Angel) of Bellaire, Ohio; Penny Wright (Mark) of Stowe, Ohio; Pam Hopkins (Tom) of Akron, Ohio; Patty Crabtree (Bill) of Mogadore, Ohio; 6 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and his beloved dog, Honey. Friends will be received Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Brookside, Ohio, where services will be held Saturday January 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bill Hargett, officiating. Military graveside honors provided by Belmont County Council of VFW at Holly Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Entombment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Pleasant Grove.
