John A. Gavarkavich, 65, of Martins Ferry, OH, died February 12, 2014 at his residence. He was born Jan. 16, 1949 in Martins Ferry a son of the late Edward Gavarkavich, Sr. and Dorothy "Dee" (Phillips) Gavarkavich. He retired from the Mingo Junction Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. John was a member of St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church, Colerain, OH,and American Legion Post #38 and Purple Rider Booster Club both of Martins Ferry. He loved to fish and was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Judy L (Bernot) Gavarkavich. Surviving are his children; Gretchen Gavarkavich and John E. Gavarkavich both of Martins Ferry and Stacy and family of Wheeling, WV, a brother, Edward (Janice) Gavarkavich of Martins Ferry, two grandsons, nephew; Edju, niece; Holly Hammerquist and several great nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Friday 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH, where services will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 12:00 pm with Fr. Tom Marut officiating. Burial follows in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
