December 22, 1946 – July 9, 2024
John J. Petrella, 77, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Wheeling Hospital. He was born December 22, 1946, in Steubenville, Ohio to the late Ralph and Theresa Torcasio Petrella.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Petrella and Craig A. Petrella.
John was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a graduate of Franciscan University with a B.S. degree in Business. He was employed at Weirton Steel for 37 ½ years working his way up to middle management and was an instructor for five years at West Virginia Business College. John was also a member of the American Legion, Sons of Italy, Bellaire Lodge, Sons of St. Joseph, and Confraternity of St. Nicholas. At the Cathedral of St. Joseph, he served in various liturgical ministries and was the scheduler for lay ministers. He also volunteered at 18th Street Neighborhood Center.
John, a devoted, loving husband and father, was survived by his wife Roberta of 54 years and daughter, Judge Jennifer A. Petrella of Dayton, Ohio. Other survivors are sisters-in-law, Mary E. Walicki of Davenport, Florida; Susanna Kress of Bridgeport, Ohio; Margaret Petrella of Wintersville, Ohio, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 14, 2024, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Bridgeport, Ohio 43912. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Joseph on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 10am with The Most Reverend, Mark E. Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling Charleston, officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvery Cemetery, Wheeling.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial contributions may be made to a Catholic charity or Catholic education.
