Obituary

John "Corky" Vrotsos, 80, of Virginia St., Martins Ferry, OH died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 at home. He was born Aug. 9, 1927 in Saberton, WV, a son of the late Pandazis and Maria (Moutafis) Vrotsos. He retired from the Martins Ferry City School District as a teacher, wrestling coach, and administrator. John was a former Director for the Martins Ferry Recreation Dept., former City Councilman, and Housing Authority Board member. He started the Community School program in 1970. He was a recipient of the 1978 "Mr. Mat" award and inducted into the Martins Ferry Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1994. Corky was inducted into the OVAC Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Life Giving Fountain of Martins Ferry and the YMCA of Wheeling. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers George, Pete and James Vrotsos. Surviving are his wife Jacqueline (Ayers) Vrotsos, two sons John (Anne) Vrotsos of St. Clairsville, OH, and Keith (Julie) Vrotsos of Fontana, Ca, a daughter Sue (Roger) Levi of Martins Ferry, three brothers Gus Vrotsos of Martins Ferry, Tony (Evelyn) Vrotsos of Richardson, TX and Nick (Jerri)Vrotsos of Massillon, OH, two sisters Loraine Fallieras of Tampa, FL, and Daisy Gocsik of Brecksville, OH. Eight grandchildren Vincent and Nicholas Levi, John Thomas Vrotsos, II, Audra Vrotsos, Eliza Vrotsos, Sarah Vrotsos, JoAnna Vrotsos, and Keith Michael Vrotsos. He will also be missed by his brothers and sisters-in-law Darlene and John Kibby and Laura Kibby, Bob and Patty Forsythe, and Tom and Patty Ayers, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his "Wrestling Family", and special friend his German Shepherd "Duke". Family and friends will be received Thursday 5-8 PM and Friday 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH where services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM with Fr. Menelaos Papageorgiou and Rev. Dr. Bill N. Lawrence officiating. Burial follow in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Martins Ferry Wrestling Hall of Fame Committee, c/o Keith A. Sommer & Jeff Oberdick, 409 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935.
