Joseph D. Maxwell, 87 of St. Clairsville, formerly of Martins Ferry, died peacefully, Friday, September 19, 2014 at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry. Mr. Maxwell was born August 29, 1927 in Greggsville, WV, a son of Clarence and Evelyn Auber Maxwell. He was a WWII, U.S. Army veteran, stationed in Germany. Mr. Maxwell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Martins Ferry; the Martins Ferry American Legion; former member of the Lathers Local Union #184 of Wheeling; and the Carpenters Local Union #3 of Wheeling. Mr. Maxwell was a talented and skilled lather and carpenter; he was President of the Frank Burson, Inc., a plaster and drywall contracting company. He enjoyed playing and watching golf, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he always enjoyed a good Beefeater Martini. His wife of 52 years, the former L. Mae Daugherty, whom he married February 28, 1948, died November 12, 2000. Mr. Maxwell is survived by four children, Daniel (Pamela) Maxwell of Palm Coast Fl., Donna (Raymond) Miller of Pittsburgh, Deborah Flynn of Columbus, and Denise (Dr. Kenneth) Herr of Columbus. Nine grandchildren, Joseph Marchio, Daniel (Jenifer) Marchio, Matthew Maxwell, Lindsay (Michael) Jewell, Mark Maxwell, Luke Miller, Kayne Herr, Erin Miller and Kwynn Herr, and three great-grandchildren, Emmaline Jewell, Declan Jewell, and Vincent Marchio. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin Maxwell, and four sisters, Dorothy Rinehart, Evelyn Conaway, Margaret Foster and Kathleen Cage. Family and friends will be received Monday, September 22nd from 2-4 & 7-9 at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut Street in Martins Ferry, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Bill Lawrence officiating. Interment will follow at Prall Cemetery in West Liberty, WV Military honors will be presented Tuesday at 9:45 am in the funeral home by the V.F.W. Belmont County Honor Guard. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
