Joseph A. Ruskowski, 90, of Martins Ferry, OH, died Thursday, January 2, 2014, at his residence. He was born November 10, 1923 in Lafferty, OH a son of the late Stephan and Phyllis (Mroz) Ruskowski. He retired from the former Valley Camp Coal Mine. Joe was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Mother of God Council #1421 and American Legion Post #38 all of Martins Ferry and V.F.W. Post #4811 of Yorkville, OH. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy WWII where he served on the USS California 1943-45. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Josephine H. (Bumbico) Ruskowski, his son John M. Ruskowski, brothers; Stephen, Andy, Chester, John, Walter, Frank, Daniel, and Zigge Ruskowski, sisters; Ida, Mary, Nellie, Rose, Helen, Blanche and Sophie. Surviving are his son Frank J. Ruskowski of Jerusalem, OH, daughter-in-law, Janice M. "Janey" Ruskowski of Shadyside, OH, brother; Eddie Rusk of Wheeling, WV, grandchildren; Rebecca (Travis) Dunn, Dr. Adam Ruskowski, John Ruskowski, Jr. and Patrick Ruskowski, a great-grandson Colby Dunn, and a special friend Dorothy Herman. Friends will be received at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH, Sunday 12-3 and 6-8 pm. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held Monday, January 6, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Martins Ferry, with Rev. Tom Marut officiating. Entombment follows in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Martins Ferry. Wake services will be held Sunday at 7:30 pm in the funeral home. Military honors will be presented by the Belmont County V.F.W. Honor Guard at 9:00 am at the funeral home prior to the funeral. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
