Obituary

Karl W. Sommer, Jr., 79, of Martins Ferry, Ohio, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015 at his home. He was born July 7, 1935 in Martins Ferry, a son of the late Karl W. Sommer, Sr., and Carrie L. (McDermott) Sommer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley J. (Sanders) Sommer, and a grandson, Alex Shutek. Surviving are his wife, Nancy L. (Teeter) Sommer; his children: Karl W. (Debbie) Sommer, III, of Groveport, Ohio, Susan (Tom) LeCron, and Carolann (Ed) Shutek, both of St. Clairsville, Ohio; his grandchildren: Aimee LeCron Harper, Sommer Shutek, Karl W. Sommer, IV, Katibeth LeCron, Matthew Shutek, Kristin Sommer and Bradley LeCron; Nancy's children: Robert (Jamie) Munjas of Waterford, Ohio, Cathy (Bob) Swann of Barton, Florida, and Doug (Brenda) Munjas of Forest City, North Carolina; Nancy's grandchildren: Harley, Hunter, Konner, and Kaleb Munjas; his brother, Keith (Carol) Sommer, of Martins Ferry, and his sister, Cheryl (Bob) Scheehle of St. Clairsville, Ohio. Karl was a graduate of Martins Ferry High School Class of 1953, Ohio State University Class of 1957, with a BS in Business Administration, and a member of the Ohio State football team, playing under the direction of Coach Woody Hayes. He was a member of the 1954 National Championship team. Karl was a graduate of Franklin University College of Law Class of 1963 with an LLB degree. He was admitted to practice law before the Ohio Supreme Court in 1967 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967. He has practiced law in Martins Ferry since 1964. Karl served the City of Martins Ferry as law director for 16 years, assistant city prosecutor for Columbus, Ohio for one year, assistant county prosecutor for Belmont County for nine years, and is a past member of Martins Ferry Civil Service Commission. Karl was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Martins Ferry, Ohio State Bar and Belmont County Bar Associations, Martins Ferry Booster Club, and a honorable member of the Alert Engine Co. of the Martins Ferry Fire Dept. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Family and friends will be received at Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, Ohio, Saturday, February 28, 201,5 from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. William O.
