Obituary

Kenneth L. Sommer, 93, of Martins Ferry, OH, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Valley Hospice Care Center, Steubenville, OH. He was born Jan. 11, 1917 in Bridgeport, OH a son of the late Albert L. and Sophie (Laipple) Sommer. He retired from Nickles Bakery of Martins Ferry where he was Plant Manager and a consultant. Ken was a member of the First U. Methodist Church and Ohio City Lodge #486 F. & A.M. both of Martins Ferry. He was also a member of Osiris Temple of Wheeling, WV and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Ken served as a Major with the U.S. Army during WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Jayne Cramer, four brothers Karl W. Sommer, Sr., Donald R. Sommer, A. Irvin Sommer, and Ralph E. Sommer, and two sisters Louise Truax and Martha Hathaway. Surviving are his son James (Margaret) Sommer of Martinsburg, WV, a daughter Kathy Weber of Atlanta, GA, a sister Betty J. Thomas of Tiltonsville, OH, seven grandchildren Christopher Sommer, Jamie Lynn Sommer, Scott Cramer, Terry Cramer, Carolyn Sommer, Stephanie Harding, and Amanda Orsini, two great grandchildren Giuliana Cramer and Lorialei Orsini, and his special friend Agnes Magnone. Friends will be received Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH from 11 am until time of services at 1:00 pm with Rev. Thomas N. Thomas officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Martins Ferry Public Library, 20 S. Fifth St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935.
