Lewis E.
Otto
June 22, 1926 – March 6, 2012
Lewis E. Otto, 85, of Martins Ferry, OH died Tuesday, Mar. 6, 2012 at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. He was born Jun. 22, 1926 in Martins Ferry a son of the late Joseph and Barbara (Jasensky) Otto. He was retired from the Yorkville Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. "Lewie"was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He served in the U.S. Navy Pacific Theater during WWII aboard an LST 811 where he was awarded three medals with a star and four ribbons with a star for his service. He enjoyed telling stories about his experience in the Navy to the many people he befriended. In 1959, while working his job at Wheeling Steel, he singlehandedly built the home that he raised his family in. While he was very proud of the many unique features he built into his house, nothing brought him more pride and joy than his 11 grandchildren. He was a man of many talents, had a passion for learning and could build or fix anything. While building his first television from a kit in 1957, he anticipated the need to control the volume to avoid commercials. Thus, he justifiably could lay claim for the invention of the "mute" button. He was a great man from the greatest generation. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Janet Otto-McEvoy and two brothers Fred and Joe Otto. Surviving are his wife Stella M. (Kulewicz) Otto, three sons; Matthew (Anna) Otto of Mt. Pleasant, OH, Andrew (Sherl) Otto of Pickerington, OH and Joseph (Marcelle) Otto of Maineville, OH, a daughter Nancy (Kevin) Hrusovsky of Hopkinton, MA, a sister Esther Larve, a son-in-law Michael McEvoy and eleven grandchildren; Erin McEvoy, Stephanie, Michael and Katie Otto, Angela Hrusovsky, Andrea and Jenny Otto and Stephen Hrusovsky, Marissa , Alyssa, and Joseph Otto. Friends will be received Friday 6-9 pm at the Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH. Friends will also be received Saturday, Mar. 10, 2012 from 12 pm until time of services at 1:00 pm with Rev. Tom Marut officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School, 20 N. 4th St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
