Mary E. (Masteracci) Markis, 93, of Waban, MA, formerly of Martins Ferry, OH died on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011. She was born in Fairpoint, OH on September 15, 1917, the daughter of the late John D. and Magdalene Hadzidakis Mastorakis ("Masteracci"). Her parents were born in Rethymno and Xania, Crete, Greece. She was a graduate of St. Clairsville High School, Class of 1936 and the Bellaire Nursing School. She was a nurse for many years at the Wheeling Hospital and a member of Zoodochos Peghe, Greek Orthodox Church of the Life Giving Fountain, Martins Ferry. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Emanuel George Anagnoste Markis (Marnierakis), who owned and operated the Martins Ferry Bakery, her brother James, and a sister, Evangelia ("Wanda"). She is survived by her son, John Emanuel Markis, M.D., Waban, MA, Carolyn Diehlmann Markis, Wellfleet, MA, grandson Emanuel (Donna) John Markis, Esq, Wellesley, MA, granddaughters Mary Evangelia Markis, Chicago IL, and Stacy [Anastasia Katherine] (Neil) Horne, Westfield, NJ, 6 great- grandchildren, John Emanuel Markis, James Emanuel Markis, Mary Carolyn Markis of Wellesley MA, Katherine Noel Kraczkowsky of Chicago, IL, Julia Roselyn Horne and Natalie Grace Horne of Westfield, NJ, nieces and nephews Anna Glyptis (Emmanuel) Maragouthakis and Mark Nicholas Glyptis, Esq of Trenton, NJ, John (Cathy) Master, Esq, of Lewis Center, OH and Linda Master, Dexter City, OH and cousins in Crete, Greece. Friends will be received at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut and Fifth, Martins Ferry, Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Life Giving Fountain, 315 N. Fifth St. Martins Ferry with Rev. Menelaos Papageorgiou officiating. Interment in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry. Trisagion services will be held Sunday at 2:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Life Giving Fountain, 315 N. Fifth St. Martins Ferry,OH 43935 Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
