Mary Alice (Selby) Pugh, 66, of Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Martins Ferry, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at her home with her loving husband David and other family members. Mary Alice had been valiantly battling breast cancer since 2001. She was born January 14, 1943 in Martins Ferry and is the daughter of the late Edward M. and Edith O. (McDaniel) Selby. Mary Alice graduated from Martins Ferry High School and later West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV (Delta Gamma) where she earned her bachelor's degree in laboratory medicine and was a cheerleader for four years and head cheerleader for two years. She later received her Masters Degree in Education from Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She began her "second career" in education in the late 1980's and in 1993, she founded New Horizon Academy in Boca Raton, FL. For sixteen years, Mary Alice educated South Palm Beach high school students who were struggling and falling through the cracks in the public school system. For over twenty years, Mary Alice helped hundreds of at-risk students complete high school, develop a responsible attitude, and go on to pursue rewarding careers. Mary Alice is a past member of the United Methodist Church of Martins Ferry, Ohio. Mary Alice and David are members of the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach, FL. She is survived by her husband David Pugh of 43 years, two sons Todd (Kimberly) Pugh, and Michael (Jennifer) Pugh all of Chicago, Illinois, two brothers Edward M. "Ted" (Ethel) Selby of Middlefield, Ohio, and John R. (Barbara) Selby of San Diego, California. Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 at 1:00 pm at Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry, Ohio with Rev. Van D. Fisher officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Attn: Donor Services, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309, or Hospice by the Sea, 1531 W. Palmetto Park Rd., Boca Raton, FL 33486-3395. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
