Phyllis J. (Gitto) Bednar, 78, formerly of Bulltown, Martins Ferry, OH died Sun., Oct. 15, 2006 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry. She was born Oct. 7, 1928 in Martins Ferry a daughter of the late Salvatore "Sam" and Concetta "Anna" (Nester) Gitto. She retired from the former Stone & Thomas Department Store of Wheeling, WV and the Martins Ferry Recreation Center. Phyllis was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Martins Ferry and several Catholic Shrines. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-three years Albert J. Bednar, Jr., a brother Steve Gitto, and two sisters Rose Gitto Insana and Mary Gitto Zitari. Surviving are two daughters Loreen S. Shreve and Cindy (Charles) Mozingo, a son Joseph A. (Denise) Bednar, a brother Dominic (Mary) Gitto, of Martins Ferry and a sister Frances (Jack) Amato of Elm Grove, WV, five grandchildren Lorie Shreve (Dutch) Reeb, Lisa Shreve (Buck) Jenkins, Heather Mozingo (David) Welling, Joey Bednar, and Brittany Mozingo and six great grandchildren. Private visitation will be held at the convenience of the family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at 11:00 AM at St. Marys Catholic Church, with Rev. Thomas A. Magary officiating. Burial follows in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, WV. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 20 N. Fourth St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935. Arrangement by Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book at the top of this page.
