Obituary

Ruth Jane Faithful, 81 of Bridgeport, Ohio is the wife of the late Robert W. Faithful III. Born June 8, 1929 to the late George and Anna Cassels of Smithfield, Ohio, she was the second of eleven children and the oldest daughter. Jane graduated with honors from Smithfield High School. She is the mother of three sons, Robert, George and Fred Faithful. While caring for the boys she took night courses and graduated from Wheeling College of Commerce and Elliott's School of Business. She also attended West Liberty State Teachers College. She served in many community positions as president of the PTA: a member and leader of the Mount Zion Baptist Church of Bridgeport, Ohio: officer with the Bridgeport Women's Club; board member with the Eastern Branch of Ohio University and Belmont Technical College; and president of the Bridgeport Rotary. One of her greatest honors was to serve as the Grand Worthy Matron for the Amaranth Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star for the State of Ohio in 1968. She loved family history and served as president of the Thomas C. Woodson Family Association exploring lengthy history of contributions of our family in Ohio and ties to the Jefferson/Hemmings oral history. Jane received an Honorary Degree from Wilberforce University as an acknowledgment of the family contribution to education in Ohio. As a survivor of breast cancer and later leukemia she was an informal counselor to many Ohio valley women. Jane served with Ohio Employment Service and was a manager of the local office that helped shape the development of the Ohio Valley Mall and the growth of business in Belmont County. Her long ties to libraries led her back after State retirement to serve the Bridgeport community and lead the effort to raise $400,000 for a new library. A tree is dedicated to her at that site. She was recognized in 1999 as the Retiree of the Year from the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers (George & Festus Cassels), sisters Mary Jackson, Mildred Dickerson, & Peggy Jackson. Ruth Jane Faithful is survived by three sons: Robert Wm. Faithful IV of Centreville, Va; George E. Faithful of Westerville, Ohio; and Fred L. Faithful of South Riding, Va.; five grand children: Fredrick III of Colorado Springs; George of St. Louis; USAF Captain Shannon Faithful of Destin, Florida, Richael Faithful of Washington, DC; and Robert W. Faithful V of Centerville, Va.; and two great grandchildren. She shared life with wonderful brothers and sisters: Marjorie (Ronald) Kirby of Phoenix, AZ.
