Ruth L. Westlake, 70, of Bethany, WV, formerly of Colerain, OH died Friday, Mar. 25, 2005 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV. She was born June 15, 1934 in Colerain a daughter of the late Merle T. and Virginia (Fox) Westlake. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Paul E. Westlake, and two sisters Margaret Schmitt and Ellen W. Holler. Surviving are a brother Merle T. Westlake of Cambridge, Mass, two sisters Alice Virginia Bonham of Martins Ferry and Nancy W. Ault of Wellsburg, WV, and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Westlake was a graduate of Martins Ferry High School and Kent State University. She retired as Managing Editor of the Times-Leader in Martins Ferry and was currently working as Director of Public Information and Publications at Bethany College. She taught at Ohio University Eastern and at Bethany College and authored a computer/coding manual for reporters. In addition to many other awards and honors, she was the first United Press International (UPI) woman wire editor in the country. Ruth was a member of the Colerain Presbyterian Church. Friends will be received Wed. 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH where services will be held Thursday, Mar 31, 2005 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Sarah Webb officiating. Burial follows in Weeks Cemetery, Bridgeport, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or charity of your choice.
