Obituary

Shirley Jean Brown, 72, of Woodsfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. To know her is to be loved.

Born on April 27, 1954, in Woodsfield, Ohio, Shirley was the daughter of the late Charles Basil Palmer and Ruth Marie Henthorn Palmer. She graduated from Beallsville High School in 1972. Following graduation, Shirley dedicated herself to raising her three daughters and creating a loving home for her family. She later worked as a receptionist in Dr. Zink’s office for several years.

A woman with a generous heart and a passion for helping others, Shirley devoted much of her life to serving her community. She volunteered extensively and was especially proud of her work with Cancer Gas Cards, Inc. and Rally for Life, organizations she helped establish to support individuals and families facing cancer.

In 2009, Shirley founded Cancer Gas Cards Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping cancer patients and their families offset the financial burden of traveling for treatment. Through her vision, compassion, and determination, countless lives were touched and helped during difficult times.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Ady; her brother-in-law, Ray Ady; her sister-in-law, Linda Palmer; her nieces, Baby Girl Palmer, Ruthann Palmer, and Aldawna Hammel; her nephew, Charles Ady; and two beloved four-legged companions, Mazie and Smoke.

Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband and best friend, Greg Brown; her daughters, Hope (Robert) Palmer-Rutter of Woodsfield, Ohio, Sarah (Charles Cunningham) Palmer of Euclid, Ohio, and Jonna (James) Magyar of Sardis, Ohio. She also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Victoria (Forrest Hamrick) Bier, Elizabeth (Tyler Morgan) Rutter, Rebecca (Lance) Goddard, Logan Rutter, Weslee (Hailey Knott) Magyar, and Charleigh Cunningham.

Shirley was also blessed with four great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy: Gregory Morgan, Charlotte Morgan, Vernelia Morgan, and Lincoln Goddard. She is further survived by a brother, Chuck Palmer and a sister, Crystal Thomas; two special nieces and caregivers, Kathleen Ady and Lauryn Dias, along with many other family members, friends, and loved ones who will miss her dearly.

Family and friends will be received Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, Harper Chapel, Beallsville, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 26, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Jeff Knode. Interment will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery.

Honoring Shirley's giving spirit, her family requests that in lieu of flowers and keepsakes, memorial contributions be made to Cancer Gas Cards Inc., 48397 Keylor Hill Road, Woodsfield, Ohio 43793.
