Obituary

TAFLaN, Simon "Si", 89, of St. Clairsville formerly of Brookside died Monday August 23, 2010, in East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio. Si was born in Bridgeport, Ohio on May 28, 1921 to Nicholas and Mary Jiga Taflan. Si was the youngest of four now deceased siblings: brothers Nicholas and Matthew and a sister, Suzanne Wilson. Simon graduated from Bridgeport High School, 1939 and the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. He served in WWII and the Korean Conflict, and continued to serve in the Naval Reserves and commanded the Naval Reserve Surface Division located in Warwood. Si was co-owner of Taflan Steel Fabricators. He was a member of Bridgeport Masonic Lodge #181, Eastern Star, American Legion Post 227, and United Methodist Church, all of Bridgeport. Si also served on the Bridgeport School Board and Brookside City Council. Simon is survived by his wife of 64 years Maxine Baxter Taflan; two sons: Retired Lt. Colonal Simon John and Heidi Taflan of Stutgart, Germany, Glenn and Kimberly Taflan of Westerville, Ohio; four grandchildren: Ericka, Anna, Nick and Matt; Numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Thursday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Brookside, Ohio, where services will be held Friday August 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend James Hoff, as officiant.
