Obituary

Thomas V. Bazar, at the age of 93, passed away at home on his farm on Scotch Ridge, Martins Ferry, OH, November 18, 2018. He was born on July 31, 1925. Tom is survived by his wife Evelyn (Patterson) Bazar, daughter Kathleen (Robert) Tomlinson of Martins Ferry, brother Bill of PA, sisters Delores George of Tiltonsville, OH and Helen Doughty of Virginia, sister-in-law Elsie Sabo, numerous nieces and nephews, and his cats Gracie and Kitty. He will be welcomed into Heaven by his Hungarian parents Joseph and Mary Ann (Klein) Bazar, brothers Joe, Frank, George, Charlie, Donnie and Raymond Bazar and sisters Mary Shemenski, Violet Padglek and Goldie Gray.
Tom was a World War II U.S. Navy survivor of Omaha Beach. The traumatic events while defending his country and family, as well as the back injury, left a deep impact on the rest of his life.
Tom worked outdoors a number of years on the PA/Penn Central Railroad in Mingo Junction, OH and Dennison, OH. After being laid off, he found various part-time jobs until becoming employed at Valley Machine/CE Cast (Combustion Engineering) in Martins Ferry as an erection machinist. This became his favorite place of employment. While President of the local IAM union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) he was privileged to meet Ohio Senators. When Valley Machine closed, Tom worked for a time at Blaw-Knox in Wheeling, WV, then at Wheeling Stamping in Warwood, WV, until his retirement. He also worked with the Agricultural Services Committee surveying farms.
Tom was a hard worker and accomplished much. All while working full time, shift work, and double shifts, he had cleared and worked the 87 acre farm and repaired his own farm equipment. He grew corn, wheat, barley, rye, and vegetables. He started out with dairy cattle, hogs, chickens and sold milk and eggs; later switching to beef cattle.
Tom was a member of the American Legion Post #38 and a former member of the Eagles both of Martins Ferry. For relaxation, Tom enjoyed fishing and loved listening to country western music, bluegrass, and polka music. Tom sometimes sang or played the harmonica. He also enjoyed painting, drawing, playing cards, and later on assembling jigsaw puzzles. Tom loved animals and his family very much.
Family and friends will be received at Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH, Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 and Wednesday, November 21, 2018 from 10:00 am until time of the funeral service at 11:00 am with nephew, Rev. Charles Doughty and Hospice Chaplain, Joy Wright officiating. Tom will then be laid to rest at Holly Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 73360 Pleasant Grove, with a brief graveside service.
Military honors will be presented by the Belmont County Council of American Legion Posts at 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
