Velma L. (Ewing) Applegarth, 87, of Martins Ferry, OH, died Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at her residence. She was born December 18, 1927 in Uhrichsville, OH a daughter of the late Virgil Ewing and Angela M. (Spendal) Ewing Bandi. Velma retired as Owner/Operator of Applegarth's Grocery of N. 8th St., Martins Ferry. She was President of the Mackey Community Association and Center. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Women's Club, St. Mary's Catholic Daughters, former Eagles #456 Ladies Auxiliary, Martins Ferry Fireman's Liberty Engine Company #3, Lucky Eagle 300 Club, Martins Ferry Senior Center and the Martins Ferry Purple Rider Booster Club all of Martins Ferry. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband John R. Applegarth, Jr., her daughter, Sharon Beck, step-son, Robert Applegarth, grand daughter, Angela Beck Schrimp, brother, Melvin " Bud" Ewing and sisters; Mabel Ewing, Carol Bandi and Betty McClay. Surviving are her sons; John R. (Rose Anne) Applegarth, III of Martins Ferry and Donald B. (Tracey) Applegarth of Mars, PA , brother, Kenneth Bandi of Yorkville, OH and sister, Mary Ellen "Idie" (Bandi) Arnold of Bellaire, OH, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Family and friends will be received at Heslop Funeral Home, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH, Sunday 2-7 pm. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Monday, December 29, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Martins Ferry with Rev. Tom Marut officiating. Entombment follows in St. Mary's Cemetery, Martins Ferry. Rosary devotions will be recited Sunday at 3:00 pm followed by Wake services at 6:30 pm in the funeral home.
