Violet V. (Hall) Gates, 84, of W. Vine St., Martins Ferry, OH died Tues., Dec. 28, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, OH. She was born Sept. 26, 1920 in Barton, OH a daughter of the late William G. and Lola (LeMasters) Hall, Sr. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Martins Ferry and the You and I Sunday School Class at the old church on Jefferson St. She was a former member of the Warwood Women's Club of Wheeling and the Martins Ferry Eagles. During World War II under the Civil Service she did clerical work for the Army Engineers at Jacksonville, FL where her father was a Federal Mine Inspector. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers William G. Hall, Jr. and Robert Hall, a sister Catherine Kovalchie. Surviving are her husband James A. Gates, a son Gary A. Gates of Martins Ferry, two grandchildren Heather L. Baker of Old Washington, OH and Steven (Gegit) Gates of Mozart and two great granddaughters Ashley and Brittany Gates, two nieces Marcia Gillespie Perry of Martins Ferry and Jeanne Gillespie Barrett of New Cumberland, WV and a nephew William K. Hall of Wheeling. Violet loved dogs and cats and they loved her. Surviving are her dog Prissy and her cat Missy. Friends will be received Thurs., 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH where services will be held Fri., Dec. 31, 2004 at 1:00 PM with Minister Terry Erwin officiating. Burial follows in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry.
