Obituary

Virginia Daniel Thomas passed away on Monday, January 26, 2015, at Valley Hospice Center in Wheeling, WV, at the age of 90. Virginia was born and raised in Wheeling, the daughter of the late Steve and Mary Daniel who had emigrated from Greece. In the second half of her life, Virginia lived in St. Clairsville where she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Judge Harold B. Thomas. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Angelo Daniel, and two infant siblings.Virginia was a 1942 graduate of Wheeling High School. After high school and during WWII, she worked for several years at the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company Wheeling. Virginia left Hazel-Atlas to help manage MaryAnn's, a downtown-Wheeling children's clothing shop owned by her mother and aunt until the 1950s.Virginia was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church, both St. John the Divine in Wheeling and the Church of the Life Giving Fountain (Zoodochos Peghe) in Martins Ferry. She was always proud of her relationship with her church and served in a variety of ways, including as a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and as a charter member of the Greek American organization Daughters of Penelope. In helping others, Virginia was generous with her time and was grateful for the many lasting friendships she made through her volunteer work. She was active for many years in the Ohio Valley Hospital Lily Twig and also volunteered with the American Heart Association and the St. Clairsville Public Library. Surviving are her sons, Stephen and his wife, Nancy of Westerville, Ohio and Mark and his wife, Karri of St. Clairsville, and daughter, Maria and her husband, Mark Dudley, of Washington DC. Virginia is also survived by four grandchildren, Bryan, Andrea, Aleksa and Addyson and one step-grandchild, Max Dudley as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends who helped sustain Virginia's life in her later years and to whom the family is deeply grateful. Friends and family will be received on Thursday, January 29, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Bridgeport, Ohio. Trisagion Services will be held on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015, at 11 a.m., at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Life Giving Fountain, 314 N. 5th St., Martins Ferry, Ohio. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
