Obituary

Virginia Lee Bailey Jarrett, 89, Wheeling, formerly of Bridgeport, Ohio passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 4, 1935, in Bridgeport, a daughter of the late Elizabeth Bailey McMahon of Bridgeport and wife of the late Calvin Eugene Jarrett of Bridgeport.

Virginia was a Spiritualist by faith and enjoyed writing poetry, listening to music, spending time with her late Shitzu Max, and late grand furbabies Maddie and Sophie, and spending time with her family. She was a well-known Poet in Bridgeport, as her poetry was displayed every Friday in the Intelligencer's Poetry Forum for many years from the 1970s to the 1990s.

She received The Golden Poet Award in 1987 and an honorable mention in the Great American Poetry Contest, sponsored by the World of Poetry in Sacramento, CA. The poem "I Fold My Hands," was dedicated to our father, and music was written by her mother, Elizabeth. 900,000 people submitted poems to the contest, and only 2,000 were chosen for this award. Her poem "I Fold My Hands" has been copyrighted and published in the Great American Poetry Anthology. Her writings throughout the years have been for her daughters and grandchildren and are her legacy to them. Her late husband was an inspiration for many of her poems.

Virginia's favorite flowers were Gardina and Peony, and she was an excellent Swing dancer and attended many dances at Wheeling Park White Palace, Oglebay Pine Room, and The Osiris Shriners.

She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Linville Creighton of Wheeling, Charlene Jarrett Bernardi, and her husband Robert Bernardi, Jr. of Wheeling, and the late daughter Janet Jarrett, granddaughter DeLaine Creighton of Wheeling, grandson Brian Creighton and his wife Donna Creighton of Wheeling, a great-granddaughter Shelby Creighton and two great-grandsons Ryan Creighton and Travis Creighton.

In keeping with her wishes there will be no public visitation.  The family will have a private tribute to their mother and grandmother.
