Obituary

Walter T. Link, 94, of Martins Ferry, OH passed away peacefully on Monday, July 18th at Liza's Place surrounded by his family. He was born September 2, 1921 in Wheeling, WV, the third son of the late John and Mary Ellen (Flatley) Link and raised in North Wheeling. He attended Wheeling Central Catholic and was retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, Beech Bottom Plant. Walter lived a life of service. He served in the U.S. Army, WWII as a driver with the 503rd Quartermaster Car Company, and he received a Master in Military Arts from Cumberland University for his service. He served on many local boards including Belmont Metropolitan Housing Authority for over 30 years as both a commissioner and a vice chairman. He was also a long-time union representative throughout his employment with Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. He was a past president of Martins Ferry Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow. Walter was an avid golfer, reader, and traveler known to have visited every state in the United States except Alaska. He was a member of Martins Ferry Legion. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen "Gene" (Douglass Link), long-time friend and companion Mary Dawson, and his brothers and their spouses: Harold and Imelda Link, Robert and Dorothy Link, and John and Rosily Link and nephew James "Jimmy" Link. He is survived by his children, Shelly and Larry Lewicki of Wheeling and Lesley Link of Martins Ferry, his granddaughter, Adrianne (Jacob) Manning, two great-granddaughters Elizabeth and Sarah Manning and nine nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Thursday, July 28th, from 4-8 at the American Legion Post #38, 221 S. Zane Highway, Martins Ferry, OH. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at The Cathedral of St. Joseph, 1300 Eoff St., Wheeling, WV, Msgr. Kevin Quirk officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Liza's Place Hospice, 308 Mt. St. Joseph Rd., Wheeling, WV 26003; Belmont Co. Honor Guard, P.O. Box 324, Bethesda, OH, 43715, or Martins Ferry Public Library, P.O. Box 130, Martins Ferry, OH 43935. Many will remember Walter's kind words and friendly personality. "He was kind and always smiling," said his great-granddaughter, and nothing is more true. Condolences to the family may be made by signing the guest book below.
