William "Had" Gatchell, 86, of Bridgeport, Ohio, passed Friday January 17, 2014 at Wheeling Hospital. He was born in Bridgeport on June 15, 1927, a son of the late Hadres W. and Bonnie Marie Covey Gatchell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou Howell Gatchell; and a sister Vera Marie Smith. William was a member of Masonic Lodge Bridgeport 181; First United Methodist Church of Bridgeport where he served as trustee and head usher; American Legion post #38 Martins Ferry ; Brookside Village Council member for 43 years; a member of Bridgeport Foresters Club; and a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. William is survived by a daughter Lori Marie Custer and her husband James of St. Clairsville, Ohio; a sister Patricia Ann Grover and her husband Walter "Skip" of Bridgeport; grandchildren: Matthew and Kayla Custer, and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Sunday 12 - 4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Brookside, Ohio, where services will be held Monday January 20, 2014 at 11:00a.m. with Rev. James Hoff, officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Belmont County Council of the American Legion at 10:45am, at the funeral home.
