William Lewis Schafer, 84, of Bridgeport, died Tuesday March 17, 2009 at East Ohio Regional Hospital. He was born December 9, 1924 in Wheeling, the son of the late Herman A. Schafer Sr. and Bertha Lewis Schafer. He was a retired operator at the Bayer Corp., a member of the Tri-County Shrine, Legion of Honor, Veteran Association member, Bel-Mon Shrine Club, Bridgeport Masonic Lodge #181, Martins Ferry Elks #895, Scottish Rite, St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a veteran of the US Army. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his second wife Margaret (Dolly) Knapp; a sister Helen V. Schafer; and a brother Herman A. Schafer Jr. William is survived by his third wife Irene K. Baltz-Schafer; a son William L. Schafer Jr. and his wife Deborah of Chicago, IL; two step-sons, Harry P Baltz and his wife Cindy and Lee E. Baltz and his wife Lynn, both of Wheeling; three grandchildren, Susan Roberts and her husband Joshua, Kristen Weller and her husband Mike, and Steven Schafer and his wife Stacy. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 on Wednesday March 18 at Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Brookside where services will be held on Thursday March 19 at 1 pm with Pastor Paul Schafer conducting services.
