William Whalen, 96, of Virginia St., Martins Ferry, OH died peacefully Sept. 11, 2010 at Belmont Manor Nursing Home, St. Clairsville, OH. He was born Apr. 3, 1914 in Turtle Creek, PA a son of the late William J. and Marie (Cooper) Whalen. He was a retired Sales Manager for Libby McNeil and Libby and worked briefly after retirement for Wheeling Wholesale Grocery Company. William was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and the American Legion Post # 38 both of Martins Ferry. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, W. W. II, and a recipient of the Bronze Star. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Margaret (Hosken) Whalen, two sisters Marie Whalen, and Eileen Forker. Surviving are two daughters Bonnie Best of Martins Ferry, and Colleen (David) Redinger of Parkersburg, WV, two brothers Ralph Whalen of Pittsburgh, PA, and Eugene Whalen of Sarasota, FL, four grandchildren Dana (Jon) Mader, and Jill Redinger both of Parkersburg, WV, Dr. Scott (Dr. Brooke Mitchell) Best of St. Davids, PA, and Brian (Erin) Best of Rayland, OH, and five great grandchildren. Friends will be received Tuesday, 4 -8 pm at the Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry, OH where services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 at 11:00 am with Rev. Van Fisher officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Belmont Manor Nursing Home. Military honors will be held at the funeral home Wednesday at 10:45am by the Belmont County Council of the American Legion.
