George Stonovich Obituary

George Michael Stonovich, 85 of Bridgeport passed away Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Belmont Manor in St. Clairsville.  He was born May 31, 1938, the son of the late George and Mary Ann Nastanovich but later changed his name to Stonovich.

George lived his entire life in Bridgeport, with most of it on Woods Road where he first lived with his mother and then across the street in the house that he built in 1963.  George was a 1956 graduate of Bridgeport High School where he was a member of the football team.  He played on the 1956 OVAC All Star team.  Immediately after high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force where he served his country for 4 years before settling down in Bridgeport.  In 1960, he met the love of his life, best friend, and mother of his children, the late, Joann (Lusky) Stonovich.  They were married in 1961 and were married for 52 years.  His entire life was dedicated to family and friends.  He loved to throw parties and hold family events.  Christmas was his favorite time of the year, and the Stonovich Christmas’s will go down in history as the most cherished and fun-filled holidays of all time.  George was a sign painter, a trade that he learned from his father.  He painted signs for many Bridgeport and surrounding businesses under the name Stonovich Sign Service.  George also worked at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel in Yorkville in the annealing department until his retirement.  George enjoyed following Bridgeport, Ohio state and Steelers football.  He was a member of the Bridgeport American Legion Where he served on the Honor Guard, and the Benwood American Legion.  He also served on the Bridgeport Alumni Association where he was forever a Bulldog.

George is survived by his sister, Betty Sue Stonovich of Adena, two daughters, Georgia (Barney) Beaver of Pawleys Island, SC, Sandra (Joel) Frame of Tallmadge, OH, two grandsons, Andrew Burress, and Gage Frame and three great-granddaughters, Isabella, Oakley and Raelynn and beloved cousins, John, and Sue Barath of Bridgeport.

The family will receive friends, Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 5-8pm at the Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Rd, Brookside.  Funeral Service will be at 8pm on Thursday with Pastor Paul Todd officiating.  Private burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, where full Military Honors will be presented by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
