Joseph C. Slivinski, 85, of Dillonvale, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 19, 1937 in Dillonvale, Ohio to the late Joseph and Sophie (Boruta) Slivinski. Joe grew up in Dillonvale and enjoyed all of the activities a small town can offer. He also spent time on the family farm with his cousins and uncles working and getting into mischief. He graduated in 1955 as a Dillonvale Knight Rider.
Joe married the love of his life, Dolly Lou, and they made their home in Dillonvale. There they raised three daughters who were the pride of their lives. They entertained many events at their home where everyone enjoyed Joe’s stories and Dolly’s cooking. Joe worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 42 years with Bedway Coal, Ohio Coal, and Waste Management. Even though he retired he would often be found in a dozer doing some project for friends or family. He loved to reflect on the ‘good old days’ of coal mining.
Joe had a love for all sports. Weekends in the fall were reserved for college and professional football, he never missed a game. If he wasn’t attending a game, he could be found in the friendly confines of his basement bar with friends and family. Joe was also the founder and coach of Blue Ridge Softball, where he developed life long friendships and won many games and tournaments along the way.
Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors. This love led him to be the founding member of the Shortcreek Sportsmans Club, where he served as the president for 25 years. He enjoyed telling stories of his hunting adventures as he relaxed with his ‘partner in crime’, Rich Slivinski, and many other pals around the campfire.
He was also a member of the Saint Adalbert’s Church, Dillonvale Eagles, the Polish Club, and the Dillonvale Firemen’s Club.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Sophie (Boruta) Slivinski, his wife Dolly, and his brother Rich Slivinski. He is survived by three daughters, Jodee DaGrava, Joyce Larkin (Scott), Janice Woods (Ben), four grandchildren, Jessica DaGrava, Jake DaGrava (Sharae), Zoe Woods, James Shope, and a great grandchild, Andre DaGrava. Joe touched the lives of many and will be remembered and missed dearly. His memory and laugh will live on forever in our hearts.
There will be a Catholic Mass at St. Adalbert’s Church in Dillonvale, Ohio on January 28, 2023 at 10:00 am followed by a celebration of life luncheon at The Farm Restaurant in Adena, Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, 154 Second St., Dillonvale.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made at Hounds Haven Incorporated Animal Rescue, 22 Township Road, Dillonvale, Ohio 43917.
