Mary Cope Obituary

Mary Louise Cope, 89, of Wheeling, WV passed away very peacefully at Continuous Care Center (Wheeling Hospital) on February 3rd surrounded by love and her six children.

Mary Lou was born on March 28th, 1931, the oldest daughter of Frank J. and Catharine Taylor Slatterick.

Mary Lou was a 1949 Graduate of St. John Central High School and a 1952 graduate of the Wheeling Hospital School of Nursing.


Mary Lou was a retired nurse with 40 years of service to Wheeling Hospital. She started her career and worked for 20 years on the OB/GYN Floor including Labor/Delivery Room and the Nursery. She worked for 20 years as a Nurse Manager at Wheeling Hospital Continuous Care Center, where she loved working with the elderly before retiring in 1995.

Mary Lou had a passion for nursing. She treated all her patients with much love, compassion, and kindness.

Mary Lou was a devout Catholic and a woman of great faith. She was a member of St. Michael’s Parish. She was a member of Christian Mothers, Funeral Choir, Eucharist Minister to the sick and homebound which brought her much joy. She was a member of the Wheeling Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.

Mary Lou treasured spending time with her children and grandchildren. She supported them for many years watching football, baseball, hockey games, and many dance recitals.

Her family will cherish the many special family dinners at her home. She will long be remembered for her famous cherry and lemon/meringue pies whether they be for family dinners or a grieving friend or relative. Her hobbies included walking, playing the piano, cooking, polka dancing, gardening, shopping, and watching a good Hallmark movie. She also enjoyed watching Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers games.

Mary Lou was a very generous, kind, and caring person. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband and father of her children, William P. Gallaway, and her second husband, Raymond Cope.

Surviving are her six children: Anita (George) Thomas of Pittsburgh, PA, Erin Gallaway of Wheeling, WV, Maureen (Brian) Black of Wheeling, WV, Sean (Judy) Gallaway of Wooster, OH, Kevin (Bonnie) Gallaway of Bethesda, OH, Patrick Gallaway (Patrick Jones) of Columbus, OH. Nine grandchildren: George (Megan) Thomas of Pittsburgh, PA, Christina (Ryan) Schnieders of Pittsburgh, PA, Angela Thomas of Pittsburgh, PA, James (Jessica) Amato of Raleigh, NC, Garrett Black (Fiancé) Dr. Kelsey Bauer) of Morgantown, WV, Brandon Gallaway of Wooster, OH, Lyndsey Gallaway and (Tyler Zatharias) of Pittsburgh, PA, Emily Gallaway and (Brandon Collins) of Columbus, OH, and Jacob Gallaway of Columbus, OH. 5 Great Grandchildren: Caroline Amato of Raleigh, NC and Brooks Amato of Raleigh, NC, Damian Thomas of Pittsburgh, PA, Landon Schnieders of Pittsburgh, PA, and Sophia Schnieders of Pittsburgh, PA. Her brother Chuck (Carol) Slatterick of Schenectady, NY, her sister Betty Gross of Colerain, OH. Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

 

 

Friends will be received at the Wilson Funeral Home 920 National Road Brookside on Tuesday February 9, 2021 from 3-7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 am, at St. Michaels Catholic Church 1201 National Road Wheeling with Fr. Joseph Wiley as celebrant, interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Wheeling.
